How we care for the Dales

Kilnsey Park Estate prides itself on being one of the greenest, most environmentally friendly visitor attractions in the UK. Much of the Estate has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, meaning it is nationally important and must be managed to protect its wildlife.

The first hydropower energy scheme was installed by William Roberts, grandfather of the current owner, in 1933. As well as the business generating all its electricity from renewable technology including solar panels, the on-site café and holiday cottages are heated using water source heat pumps. Ensuring that the business takes care of the Dales is a priority for current owner Jamie Roberts, who worked as Director of the National Trust on the remote island of St Helena before returning home in 2011: ‘We’re delighted that our investment in renewable energy has meant we have now achieved carbon neutral status – and we’re continuing to plant up to a thousand trees on the Estate every year.’

Kilnsey Park Estate is a member of the Green Tourism Scheme and has been awarded the top grading of Green Tourism Gold.

Each year we nominate a charity to fundraise for. In previous years recipients have included Water Aid, the Nepal Earthquake Disaster Fund and the Alzheimers Society.
