800 years of living history

The Kilnsey Estate dates back to the 1100s. The monks of Fountains Abbey owned and farmed the Estate for 400 years until Henry VIII took their lands. The Tennant family was the main landowner for the next 350 years. The Roberts family, the current owners, arrived in 1911.

Today Kilnsey Park Estate is owned and managed by Jamie Roberts, the fourth generation of the Roberts family to live and work here. Anthony and Vanessa Roberts, who set up the trout farm and visitor attraction in 1978, still live on the Estate.

The Estate has a strong commitment to conservation and sustainability, looking after hundreds of acres of precious Yorkshire Dales meadows including the UK’s rarest orchid. Kilnsey Estate generates its own electricity and now produces a surplus each year.  Current owner Jamie Roberts previously worked in nature conservation and was Director of the National Trust on the island of St Helena.
